Abstract

There is no doubt that without standardization human society as we know today, could not operate nor work. However, standardization is not only the characteristic of today because standards exist and are used for thousands of years. Therefore, we can conclude that the standardization developed and progressed in parallel with the development and progress of mankind.

The purpose of this article is to guide the reader briefly through the history of standardization and to acquaint closely with the concepts of “standardization” and “standard as important elements of organized development in any modern society. This article attempts to answer the following questions: What is the standardization? What are the benefits the standardization? What are its general objectives? On what principles are based today’s standardization? What levels exist in the standardization? What is the standardization body? What is the standard? What are its characteristics? What kind of standards we have?
