Abstract
Intemational standards must be applied in compilation of any subject system in libraries. In 1999, IFLA published the study „Principles Underlying Subject Heading Languages“ which includes 11 standards: 9 serve for compilation of subject headings and 2 for usage in practice. Their application was verified in 11 libraries from 10 countries. Standards have great value both for libraries that already posses a subject system, and for those that are in the process of compilation.
