Abstract
Aim: The aim of this paper is to explore the job satisfaction of catalogers who are engaged in formal processing of library materials, given the variety of conflicting opinions on specialized library tasks. The paper analyzes how passionate and satisfied catalogers are with their work, and what kind of working conditions they are able to create for themselves. It also aims to investigate whether catalogers perceive their job as creative or uncreative, and what impression they leave on other librarians who do not perform this type of professional work. The article also addresses stereotypes associated with catalogers within the library profession.
Approach / Methodology: The research was conducted from November 2023 to September 2024 with 25 catalogers from 12 Croatian libraries. Data were collected through a combination of observations, interviews, and think-aloud protocol conversations. Indicators of professional well-being (job satisfaction and work engagement) were examined through an oral survey conducted by the author during collaboration with catalogers as part of a workshop held within the ZKD Forum titled “What is a cataloger in a library?”,1 organized by the Zagreb Library Association, as well as through long-term cooperation with catalogers.
Results: Catalogers generally find satisfaction and engagement in their work, although the broader library environment often negatively stereotypes them.
Limitations: The sample size of catalogers was not sufficient for statistically significant analysis, but it provided a valuable insight into their perspectives.
Originality: This paper seeks to contribute to understanding the importance of a satisfied employee within the cataloging team, as well as their motivation.
1 On September 25, 2024, an online Zoom forum of the Zagreb Library Association titled “What is a Cataloger in a Library” was held, hosted by Željka Turk Joksimović, with nine guest catalogers from Croatia. (Turk Joksimović, 2024)
