Abstract

------------------------------------------------------------

Saint Clement of Ohrid established the first monastic library in early 9th century, thus he is considered to be the founder of librarianship on the territory of Macedonia. In 1944 the National and University Library was established by the Parliament of the young Macedonian state and here begins the development of modern librarianship in the Republic of Macedonia.

The Library’s mission is to make its resources available and useful to the Macedonian people and to maintain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations.

The National Library has a central role in organization and improvement of the Library and information System on national level, in strengthening the international cooperation and developing the Digital Library of Macedonia.
