Abstract

The development of bibliography in Bosnia and Herzegovina has passed long way - from elementary list of books - usually attached to the biographies of learned men after their death preserved in court registers - particularly those in sijjils of Sarajevo court all the way to the possibility for online retrieval of bibliographic data in the nascent computer network of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The first serious attempt of institutional work on Bosnian bibliography is related to the activity of the Institute for Balkan research headed by Carl Patsch in the period between 1908. until 1918.

Having in mind its role in the preservation of the documentary heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is not difficult to conclude that National and University Library in Sarajevo, established in 1945, is still the key state institution for legal deposit in this country and for preparation of current and retrospective bibliography of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
