Conservation and Preservation of Written Cultural Heritage in ALM-Institutions

Abstract

Preservation and transmission of collective written of the manhood memory must be founded by searching an efficient system of control and care for heritage. This is reccomended by valid Croatian legislation (Zakon o knjižnicama i Zakon o zaštiti i očuvanju kulturnih dobara) and provisions derived from this legislation, especially Pravilnik o zaštiti knjižnične građe, Pravilnik o matičnoj djelatnosti knjižnica u Republici Hrvatskoj i Pravilnik o Registru kulturnih dobara Republike Hrvatske.

Legislator gave the main role in preservation of written cultural heritage to the Croatian National and University Library (NUL). During the past decades, this function was fulfilled by consultations and by offering help in individual cases, mostly in so called memorial libraries. Although the establishment of the preservation system had begun in early 1990-ies, the serious work in preservation started during the second quarter of the year 2007 within Preservation and Conservation Program of the cultural heritage in libraries.

In the paper the tasks and the methodology of the Program will be presented as well as its implementation in ALM-institutions. Implementation problems and possibilities of their resolving will be accentuated (ex., establishment of jedinstveni sustav matičnih knjižnica cooperation of all interested parties).
